Ty and I began our trip from Michigan to Colorado by stopping in Wisconsin. After extensive google searching, Black River State Forest best suited our requirements.
- Free parking/camping
- Minimal detour from the highway as we had a long drive to Black Hills National Forest the next day
We left Michigan on Sunday morning, it had been 95 the day before and was mid-80's in Wisconsin. Overnight didn't really cool off and we new we were going to be in for a shock then next day in SD when temps were supposed to fall below freezing at night.
We parked at the trailhead around 6pm and hiked the Ridge Trail, hoping to find a good spot to setup camp. Within maybe a mile we had found our site on the bluff right before the trail dips back down. Nothing super special about the site or trails (granted we hiked a maximum of 1 mile) but was perfect but a quick in 'n out to hit the road early the next day and the price was right.
